Company law - Essay Example ision in good faith and for meaningful purpose Transaction with other company should not reflect personal gains To inform other members of the board concerning the transaction to seek their confidence. Decision should be rational and in the best interest of the company. The above requirements are to be fulfilled by the directors in order to satisfy the statutory duty of care and due diligence6. Business judgment In accordance with the section 134 of the Corporations Act, the upper and the bottom layers of the management should respect the provisions of the Corporations Act and the constitution of the company. The company in its own discretion can have one or more replaceable rules contained in the Corporations Act in place of Constitution. In accordance with Section 140(1) (b) of the constitution and replaceable rules have the direct bearing on a Contract that executes between the company, each director and secretary. Under the mentioned scenario each one agrees to abide by the const itution and the rules in vogue7. Here we can take example of Turquandââ¬â¢s case, according to which, an agent belonging to the company can make a contract without any authority, which is not in knowledge of the outsider. A rule is settled that ensures the protection of outsiders until and unless the security of company is not at stake8. Another case Crabtree-Vickers Pty Ltd v Australian Direct Mail Advertising Co Pty Ltd can be taken as an example to show that a person who lacks actual authority cannot be entered into a contract on behalf of the company and prior approval is required for entering into a contract by some person having actual authority not apparent one9. Sixty-Fourth Throne Pty Ltd v Macquarie Bank Limited [1998] 3 VR 133 is another example where Kandy used authority of... The Corporations Act is an important legislation passed by the legislators that governs the companies in Australia. It deals with the issues of formation and operation of companies in line with the constitution of the company; determine responsibilities of officers, process of acquisitions, mergers and fundraising.Directors should not deploy themselves in a critical position where they are unable to serve in the best interest of the organization. This inclusive of entering into commercial transactions with other entities where one cannot take decisive part in making a decision for the company. With regard to protect the rights of shareholders in case of oppressive changes in the Constitution by the Board of Directors, we may invoke the provision of section 994 of the Companies Act. According to which ââ¬Å"A member of a company may apply to the court for an order on the ground that the company's affairs are being run or have been conducted in a manner that is unfairly prejudicial to the interests of its members generally or of some part of its membersâ⬠.The mentioned section in fact protects the interest of the minority shareholders in circumstances where the majority shareholders act in a way which is detrimental to the interests of minority shareholders. Moreover, in view the effective role of the Central Bank of Malaysia and the Security Commission of Malaysia, the chances of jeopardizing the interest of shareholders are diminished.

High blood pressure Essay Example for Free
High blood pressure Essay Smoking does stunt your growth which, as well as it giving high blood pressure. When someone hangs around a smoker, they are actually inhaling the smoke, which would make them a passive smoker. A passive smoker is worse than actually being a smoker because breathing the smoke from the air is worse than taking it in through your mouth as it would cause blockages in the nose. Smoking can always cause headaches and colds and it can also give you very bad cough, also known as smoker cough. The thing that makes smoking so addictive is the nicotine that is inside them. They can be replaced with nicotine patches when and if decided to stop. Smoking also can affect your social life as it can cause arguments and it can also means sometimes it would mean you would be left alone outside smoking away while all your friends are inside as they dont smoke. Also the lose of money from smoking is becoming more and more as they are increasing the prices of the cigarettes as the government are tying to prevent people to smoke, and so by you wasting your money on small cancer sticks is pointless. Smoking can also leads to drugs, because it first starts with smoking cigarettes and then it would go further and start smoking drugs. This can completely change the individuals life around. Smoking also affects the eyesight of the individual from the conclusions that they would have to start wearing glasses. Smoking can also be the main causes of strokes, someone collapsing and some to become paralysis. Asthma is the biggest problem when it comes to smoking because smoking damages the lungs and a person who has asthma would already have a bad set of lungs. And so when someone is smoking around them, it could make it even worse and allow them to have a fatal attack. All of this start of somewhere and it is usually when the individual is a teenager because they would want to just try it. And then they would not be able to control themselves and continue smoking for the rest of their lives. With some people smoking doesnt just happen just like that, they would be either forced through peer pressure or from the attitude just trying it out. Stopping smoking is not easy because it takes a lot of will power and determination because it can be extremely difficult, but the government provides a lot of help because they want the nation to become healthier. That is also another reason for the cigarettes being brought up in prices because they want to try to get people of them. There are products out there that can be brought to help you give up smoking like nicotine patches as well as little sticks that you can inhale which would make believe you that your smoking as it gives you the same feeling but you would not be inhaling any smoke which is safer for you and the people around. Toothbrushes and Tofu :: Short Story Papers
Toothbrushes and Tofu "Yay hyperchocolate hazelnut cake Yay apricot baklava Yay carrot cake and apple crisp Yay periwinkle dining room trim Yay co-ops" - Watermyn house journal, 1986 The co-op is on the corner of Waterman and Governor streets, hunkered there like an old man, into a dilapidated permanence. Two enormous cherry trees occupy the front yard; in the fall their golden leaves are left in peace to coat the lawn until they rot or blow away. A tangled cluster of bicycles clings to a metal sculpture that is perched like an insect under the largest tree. The front garden sprouts renegade tomato plants and Echinacea flowers, long taken over with weeds, and a tin sign hangs feebly from a piece of yellow pipe, its faded letters announcing, "Watermyn Co-op Garden." The newly built front porch smells of wet, cut wood and supports a ratty looking couch, a small mosaiced table, and half a dozen un-opened Wall Street Journals. The Watermyn kitchen never fails to be a stimulating experience. This Sunday night is no exception. Ian and Allison chop vegetables, and the counters swim in piles of mushrooms, carrots, spinach, bowls of crumbled tofu and pans spread with thick pizza dough. Liz Phair plays on the stereo, just loud enough to inhibit a normal decibel of conversation. Old crumpled newspapers litter the two couches beneath the stereo, and rows of red-capped spices, cereal boxes and other assorted dried goods line the racks above the counters. Clippings, sketches and posters plaster the refrigerator and walls. Broken kitchen appliances are stuck above the fridge with black electrical tape and someone has scrawled above them in black marker, "Kitchen appliance graveyard - where all good cooking tools come to die." Ian is tall, with a warm smile and a worn-in look, faded and comfortable like someone's favorite sneakers. He groans as he opens up rotting bags of spinach, "How long has this been in the fridge? I'm not going to use this. Do you think I should use this? No, no one will want to eat this." Allison doesn't offer any suggestions. She smiles unconcernedly and slides an assembled pizza into the oven, holding her long brown hair back with one hand. Dinner is served at 6:30 and in a few minutes co-opers will begin to wander into the kitchen and common rooms, lured by the smell of cooking dough and stir-fried garlic.

Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson was a politician, scholar, activist, and an idealist who believed that ââ¬Å"there is no cause half so sacred as the cause of a people. There is no idea so uplifting as the idea of the service of humanityâ⬠. Yet he was also considered a racist. A. The Child Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born December 28, 1856 at Staunton, Virginia; one of four children to Joseph Ruggles Wilson and Janet Wilson who were of Scottish descent. His family moved to Augusta, Georgia a year after his birth and then in 1870 moving to Columbia and later moved to Wilmington in 1884. Woodrow later drop his first name, Thomas. B. The Student He got his early education from a few ex-Confederate soldiers who set up some schools after the Civil war and his father who taught him religion, literature and British history. At sixteen years of age, Wilson attended Davidson College, North Carolina for one year and later drop out of college due to his health. In 1875, he attended a College of New Jersey which is now known as Princeton University where he graduated in 1879. Later that year he studied law at the University of Virginia but left school again due to personal reasons. He continued his studying law on his own after returning home of Wilmington, North Carolina. He set up a legal practice with a friend from the University of Virginia in 1882 and passed the Georgia Bar Exam. Later, he left the practice of law and decided to continue his education at John Hopkins University, Baltimore. There he was enrolled as a graduate student in history and political science and earned his PH. D in 1886. With his research study, he made the dissertation known as Congressional Government: A Study in American Politics. In this dissertation, Wilson argued about the power the congressional government has over a weak postwar Presidency and for a constitutional change of separation of powers between Congress and the President to that of the British Parliament. In the final year of his graduate school, Wilson, at 28 years old, married Ellen Louise Axson, in Savannah, Georgia. They had three daughters in their life together, Margaret, Jessie, and Eleanor. Woodrow Wilson became an instructor at Bryn Mawr College from 1885 to 1888 teaching political economy and public law. He then accepted professorship at Wesleyan University in Connecticut, teaching history for two years. After 1890, he went back to Princeton University teaching political economy and law. From 1902 ââ¬â 1910, Woodrow Wilson served as President of Princeton University. Wilsonââ¬â¢s tenure helped shape Princeton into one of Americaââ¬â¢s great universities. C. The Governor Wilson ran for governor of New Jersey accepting the conservative Democratsââ¬â¢ proposal and won the democratic nomination. He shocked the politicians by declaring independence of the political bosses and later won the decisive victory over the Republican opponent and began his reforms against the political bosses. During two year period, Wilson had pushed legislation to allow voters to choose their candidates rather than having party bosses choose as well as secure reform for campaign finances. He also made passage for Workers Compensation for families whose working member is injured or killed on the job as well as improve the public utility commission to improve rates. During his time as Governor of New Jersey, many progressive leaders took interest in Wilson as a potential Presidential candidate, especially the Democrat William Jennings Bryan. D. The President Woodrow Wilson narrowly won the Democratic nomination in 1912 putting him against President Taft of the Republicans, Theodore Roosevelt of the Bull Moose Party, and Eugene Debs of the Socialist Party. Wilson on his platform presented a program called the ââ¬Å"New Freedomâ⬠which busted up corporate monopolies to allow the chance for competition to prevent monopolies from controlling the Federal government. Wilson won the election with 41. 9% becoming the 28th President of the United States. Few reforms he first put out was the tariff reform, The Underwood Act; which had lowered rates from 40% to 27%, as well as creating the first federal income tax with the passage of the 16th Amendment. In 1914, Ellen Louise Axson, Wilsonââ¬â¢s wife and First Lady, died from Brightââ¬â¢s disease. In 1915, Wilson married Edith Bolling Galt, who happens to be a widow at the time which made her the 2nd First Lady. With the Election of 1916 coming, the main focus came to light about the War in Europe, which Wilson being the Democratic candidate with Marshall as his running mate, bent on neutrality of keeping the United States out of the European War. His opponents were the reunited Republican Party with Charles Evan Hughes of New York as their candidate. Wilson called for military preparedness as well as a world association of peace for maintaining peace after the war in Europe ends, as well as women suffrage, and ending child labor. Democratic delegates also came up with the chant, ââ¬Å"He kept us out of warâ⬠as the campaign slogan. Wilson had narrowly won the election in November with 49. 4% vote and 277 electoral vote compared to Hughes 46. 2% vote and 254 electoral vote. E. The Racist Wilson initiated his segregation efforts while president of Princeton University, he discouraged blacks from applying for admission. Wilson's History of the American People (1901) described the Ku Klux Klan of the late 1860s as a lawless reaction to a lawless period. Wilson wrote that the Klan ââ¬Å"began to attempt by intimidation what they were not allowed to attempt by the ballot or by any ordered course of public actionâ⬠. Wilson considered African American immigrants unfitting for American citizenship and unable to integrate in the American society. He made this very evident in his book, History of the American People. Wilson described slaves as ââ¬Å"indolentâ⬠and compared them to ââ¬Å"shiftless childrenâ⬠and thought that slave masters were patient with these lazy laborers. Woodrow Wilson disapproved of the idea of African American being free. He usual related them to animals and commonly referred to blacks as darkies. Wilson held the common neo-Confederate view that the South was demoralized by Northern advocates and Congressional hassle of black equality justified extreme measures to reassert white supremacist national and state governments. Though in 1912, ââ¬Å"an extraordinary number of African Americans left the Republican Party to vote for Wilson (a Democrat), encouraged by his promises to support minorities, Wilsonââ¬â¢s cabinet expanded racially segregationist policies. Under Woodrow Wilson administration, most federal government offices were segregated ââ¬â in some departments for the first time since 1863. Many African American employees were demoted or fired. Some segregationist federal workplace policies introduced by the Wilson administration remained until the Truman Administration in the 1940s. In 1914, Wilson told The New York Times, ââ¬Å"If the colored people made a mistake in voting for me, they ought to correct itâ⬠. F. The Public Administrator Wilson believed Public Administration was ââ¬Å"government in action; it is the executive, the operative, the most visible side of government, and is of course as old as government itselfâ⬠. He was fretful about the implementation of government so he studied public administration because he believed that it could increase governmental efficiency. He condemned political leader who modulated the importance of government administration and made it ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ¦.. harder to run the constitution than to frame itâ⬠. Woodrow Wilson thought that the United States required greater compromise because of the diversity of public opinion. He compared administration to a machine that functions independent of the changing mood of its leaders. Wilson put it, ââ¬Å"public attention must be easily directed, in each case of good or bad administration, to just the man deserving of praise or blame. There is no danger in power, if only it be not irresponsible. If it be divided, dealt out in share to many, it is obscuredâ⬠¦. â⬠II. Conclusion In 1919, Wilson suffered a stroke while on a speaking tour in Pueblo, Colorado, making him unable to carry out his Presidential duties effectively. After leaving office, he retired in Washington DC where he spent the remaining three years of his life before passing away on February 3, 1924. He is the only President to be buried in the National Cathedral in Washington DC. He changed the Democratic Party to a ââ¬Å"party of reformâ⬠as well as changing foreign policy to internationalism from isolationism. He also left behind the Federal Reserve, the tariff reduction, federal regulation of business, as well as support for the labor unions. He helped prepare the United States for its role in the world with creating the League of Nations only for the US to join its; predecessor the United Nations. Woodrow Wilson left behind an idea that would fuel for global peace.

My apartment Essay
When I was younger, I fantasized about how wonderful life would be when I moved into my own apartment. Now Iââ¬â¢m a bit older and wiser, and my dreams have turned into nightmares. My apartment has given me nothing but headaches. From the day, I signed the lease; Iââ¬â¢ve had to deal with an uncooperative landlord, an incompetent janitor, and inconsiderate neighbors. First of all, my landlord has been uncooperative since the first day I came to that apartment. As promised, I arrived there at 3 p.m. sharp but he leisurely came there one hour late with depressed looking faces. Then he immediately started to give tour in the apartment and explained a little bit about the rent. After that, he impatiently asked for a deposit even though Iââ¬â¢m still touring the apartment for any deficiency in the apartment. At that time I noticed that the flush in the toilet is not functioning and asking him to repair it but him keep insisting me to pay for the deposit first. Thus with an irritating voice, I said to him that he really needs to repair it and I can see his brows frowned. Itââ¬â¢s been two months I stayed there, yet no plumber ever came to my apartment and another problem followed in which the air- conditioner started making noise and in the end it broke down. I called and emailed him but thereââ¬â¢s no reply at all, so I went straight to his house. Surprisingly, he was there laughing with his friends and my anger cannot hold anymore, so I shouted furiously about the problem happened in the apartment. After a few days, a plumber came and the air ââ¬â conditioner has been fixed. Iââ¬â¢ve had a problem not only with my landlord but also with an incompetent janitor who is a middle-aged man. My first impression toward him is already bad, for he just came to my apartment without brought any equipment to clean the apartment. Not to mention that he used the whole bottle of the cleaning product just to clean the small apartment. I can a ccept if my apartment will be shining but the thing is that I can still see muck in my toilet, dust under my sofa and dirt in my kitchen. Thereââ¬â¢s one time when he actually made my apartment like his own house. He would laid-back on my sofa and talk with his friends on the phone, watch television and eat my food in the refrigerator without my permission. The intolerable thing I canââ¬â¢t accept is that he thinks himself a plumber by fixing my kitchenââ¬â¢s sink and in the end my sink becomes worse. It has cost money for the sink to be functioning again. Perhaps the worst problem hasà been with the inconsiderate neighbors who live in the apartment above me is that they think they own the whole apartment. Even with problem occurred in the apartment and at work, I still felt that my apartment is my heaven but the peaceful moment do not last longer when they moved in the apartment above me after five months I stayed there. Then at that time my dream turned into my worst nightmares in which music being played loudly at 3 a.m. and drums being played deafeningly and people talking boisterously. Sometimes I noticed that my balcony full of dust even when the janitor came to clean my apartment. I assumed that maybe the janitor didnââ¬â¢t sweep the balcony properly but it turn out that the neighbors above me actually was the one who constantly threw dust after they had sweep their house, for they think itââ¬â¢s just debris of dust. Sometimes, my apartment seems like a small, friendly oasis surrounded by hostile enemies. I never know what side trouble is going to come from next: the landlord, the janitor, or the neighbors. Home may be where the heart is, but my sanity is thinking about moving out.

A Critical Evaluation of the Philosophy of Malcolm X
A Critical Evaluation of the Philosophy of Malcolm X Malcolm X, a self-educated [black] Muslim brought essentially two philosophies to the forefront of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s.After an introduction to the nation of Islam and Elijah Muhammad while in prison, Malcolm developed a philosophy of independence and freedom for the Black race through racial and national separation. Along with this philosophy came a seemingly deep-set hatred for the white race with him often referring to them as a race of white devils. His philosophy was met with much controversy. The theory of racial and national separation was in direct contrast with the theories of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King's philosophy included non-violent protest and a vision of a raceless society. Although Malcolm's religion was an inherently peaceful one, he believed that if the Negroes were attacked in any way, it would be fine to use force in retaliation. Because of this view, many regarded Malcolm and the rest of the Black Muslims as militant. Martin Luther King leaning on a lectern. Deutsch: ...According to Malcolm, the idea of integration was a futile one. He believed that the American socioeconomic system was unable to give Blacks what they were really looking for"mass class mobility". Also, if integration were to happen, the best the Black race would be able to expect was an entry into the lowest levels of the working class.1 For this reason, he believed that the Negro race should embrace their African-ness and build the race up from within itself; a theory not dissimilar from those of Booker T. Washington and Marcus Garvey. After a split from the so-called Black Muslim groups, headed by Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm embarked on his pilgrimage to Meccathe Hajj. On his Hajj, Malcolm, or El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, saw a different side of the Islamic religion. What he saw was Islam...

John Ericsson - Designer of the USS Monitor
John Ericsson - Designer of the USS Monitor John Ericsson invented an early locomotive, the Ericsson hot-air engine, an improved screw propeller, the gun turret, and a deep-sea sounding device. He also designed ships and submarines, most notably the USS Monitor. Early Life of John Ericsson in Sweden John (originally Johan) Ericsson was born on July 31, 1803, in Vrmland, Sweden. His father, Olof Ericsson, was superintendent of a mine and taught John and his brother Nils the skills of mechanics. They received little formal education but showed their talent early. The boys learned to draw maps and finish off mechanical drawings when their father was director of blastings on theà Gà ¶ta Canalà project. They became cadets in the Swedish Navy at ages 11 and 12 and learned from instructors in the Swedish Corps of Mechanical Engineers. Nils went on to be a prominent canal and railway builder in Sweden. By age 14, John was working as a surveyor. Heà joined the Swedish Army at age 17 and worked as a surveyor and was noted for his mapmaking skill. He began constructing a heat engine in his spare time, which used the heat and fumes of fire rather than steam. Move to England He decided to seek his fortune in England and moved there in 1826 at the age of 23. The railroad industry was hungry for talent and innovation. He continued to design engines that used airflow to provide more heat, and his locomotive designà Noveltyà was barely beaten by the Rocket designed by George and Robert Stephenson in the Rainhill Trials. Other projects in England included the use of screw propellers on ships, a fire engine design, large guns, and a steam condenser that provided fresh water for ships. American Naval Designs of John Ericsson Ericssons work on twin screw propellers attracted the attention Robert F. Stockton, an influential and progressive U.S. Navy officer, who encouraged him to relocate to the United States. They worked together in New York to design a twin screw-propelled warship. The USS Princeton was commissioned in 1843. It was armed with a heavy gun 12-inch gun on a revolving pedestal that Ericsson designed. Stockton worked to get the most credit for these designs and designed and installed a second gun, which exploded and killed eight men, including Secretary of State Abel P. Upshur and Secretary of the Navy Thomas Gilmer. When Stockton shifted the blame to Ericsson and blocked his pay, Ericsson resentfully but successfully moved on to civilian work. Designing the USS Monitor In 1861, the Navy needed an ironclad to match the Confederate USS Merrimack and the Secretary of the Navy convinced Ericsson to submit a design. He presented them with designs for the USS Monitor, an armored ship with guns on a rotating turret. The Merrimack had been rechristened the USS Virginia and the two ironclad ships did battle in 1862 to a stalemate that nonetheless aved the Union fleet. This success made Ericsson hero and many Monitor-type turret ships were built during the rest of the war. After the Civil War, Ericsson continued his work, producing ships for foreign navies and experimenting with submarines, self-propelled torpedoes, and heavy ordnance. He died in New York City on March 8, 1889 and his body was returned to Sweden on the cruiser Baltimore. Three U.S. Navy ships have been named in honor of John Ericsson: the torpedo boat Ericsson (Torpedo Boat # 2), 1897-1912; and the destroyers Ericsson (DD-56), 1915-1934; and Ericsson (DD-440), 1941-1970. MARKETING ESSAY Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
MARKETING - Essay Example Segmentation constitutes the first step in Brand Development; it is referred to as the process of dividing and sub-dividing the entire population into ââ¬Ëmeaningful segmentsââ¬â¢. The word meaningful can be elaborated upon to mean segments that have distinct needs and characteristics, which different products can cater to (Kotler, Armstrong, Saunders, Wong, 1998, pp. 185). This segmentation is not done arbitrarily rather it initially was done on the basis of the demographics that match with those of the ideal consumer of the product, however over the years the focus of segmentation has changed from demographics to more qualitative measures such as psychographics. Unilever Ltd, one of the leading Fast Moving Consumer Goods Company has developed its own model of psychographic segmentation, that is, VALS (Values and Lifestyles). Market Segmentation is done in order to channelize the Organizations resources towards a targeted population instead of aimlessly squandering them on the whole population, majority of which does not form a part of its target market. A few years ago market segmentation was taken to be an unquestionable theory of marketing. Recently however, its validity has come into question by many researchers and critics such as Yankelovich and Meer (2006, pp. 1-10), Hoek, Gendall and Esslemont (1996, pp. 25-34). Amongst a few of the arguments presented by the afore mentioned researchers against market segmentation was the fact that market segmentation involves a lot of subjective judgment that is practiced on behalf of the researcher, the psychographic market segmentation tactics have led to all the advertising emphasis on the emotional appeal, thus rendering product functionality as insignificant as a result of which product innovation is declining and so forth. Yankelovich quoted the example of Miller Lite as an example to state that the emotional appeal used due and lack of focus on the product functionality led to an unsuccessful advertising campaign,

The endangered anmial-Mouse Lemur and White-flag Dolphin Essay
The endangered anmial-Mouse Lemur and White-flag Dolphin - Essay Example Conservation programs are being developed carried out to ensure the continued existence of these fascinating animals. This essay presents a comprehensive description and current circumstances of these two endangered animals. Introduction Extinction naturally happens. In fact, a huge number of species has already died out. With regards to this, several individuals and groups have explained the worsening global scarcity of species by declaring that because extinction naturally occurs, the extinction of recent species is merely an extension of a natural occurrence. The 1973 Endangered Species Act (ESA) was the first official, federal attempt to recognize that every species serves a distinctive, special function in the environment and that people, especially governments, should keep from disturbing the balance of nature or the ecosystem (Liebesman & Petersen, 2003, 89). The double responsibility for stable and organized management of the ESA is assigned to the Fish and Wildlife Service ( FWS) for land and several marine species and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) for marine life forms. The Actââ¬â¢s original goal was ââ¬Å"to provide a means whereby the ecosystems upon which endangered species and threatened species depend may be conservedâ⬠(Liebesman & Petersen, 2003, 89). ... From the point of view of ecology, a more effective method is to focus on protecting self-sufficient environment of these species, and allowing nature do its part (Liebesman & Petersen, 2003, 89-90). The FWS is tasked to list, delist, and reclassify protected species. When it is suggested to list a species as Endangered or Threatened, the FWS publicizes the suggestion in the U.S. governmentââ¬â¢s publicationââ¬âthe Federal Register (Baur & Irvin, 2010, 1). Afterward the FWS makes a decision whether to endorse, modify, or reject the suggestion. A species can be classified either ââ¬Ëthreatenedââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëendangeredââ¬â¢, which depends on its condition and the level of threat. By definition, a ââ¬Ëthreatenedââ¬â¢ species is ââ¬Å"likely to become endangered in the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its rangeâ⬠(Baur & Irvin, 2010, 34), whereas an ââ¬Ëendangeredââ¬â¢ species is ââ¬Å"in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its rangeâ⬠(Baur & Irvin, 2010, 34). A species is listed as endangered or threatened due to any of these reasons (Liebesman & Petersen, 2003, 18-20): (1) the threatened or current disruption or devastation, alteration, shortening of its range, or weakening of its habitat; (2) overexploitation for scientific, business-related, or recreational purposes; (3) the incompetence of current regulatory measures; (4) disease; and (5) other human-made or natural phenomena affecting its ability to survive. Once a species is listed, protective measures begin. Such measures involve protection from damaging impact of government programs or operations; limitations on the capturing and selling of species; and execution of recovery plans. These attempts strengthen the survival
Cause and Effect on Gasoline Prices Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Cause and Effect on Gasoline Prices - Essay Example à The price of crude oil and how its effect is felt at the pumps is an issue of interest in as far as the price of gasoline gases is concerned. Gasoline is produced from crude oil through distillation process whereby crude oil is heated and fumes captured are converted to various products including gasoline. Thus the cost of extracting crude oil as well as the cost of processing it to produce gasoline will definitely affect the price of its products. For instance, the price of crude constitutes up to half or more of the price of gasoline gallon as suggested by Gupta and Demirbas (73). The rise in the price of crude oil has been driven by the increasing demand for oil globally and the political instability in most of the oil-producing countries according to Gallun (723). Therefore these factors end up directly affecting the price of gasoline. The depreciation of the US dollar when compared to other currencies of other countries contributes to the changes of gasoline gas price. This can be attributed to the fact that when the US dollar changes its value, there is a shift in the demand and costs of countries with different currencies. For instance the dollars depreciation against the Euro by half, the Countries using the Euro pay half more in dollars thus increases the demand. If the Us dollar depreciates, investors in return have to shift their capital there is the rise in price of crude oil gases hence affecting price of Gasoline gas according to Obadia (23). The world wide demand and supply for crude oil affects the price of gasoline gases in different ways. This is because demand and supply of crude oil is influenced by the organization of Petroleum Exporting countries it sets price of oil products produced by its members. This organization also holds the biggest percentage of oil supply in the world and thus it dictates the terms of supply of oil products as suggested by Boyes and Melvin (11). In terms of demand, during the summer there tends be to a lot of gasoline gas demand hence if demand exceeds supply the prices bare likely to rise. It is therefore true that imbalance in supply and demand leads to fluctuation in the price of gasoline gases according to International Monetary Fund (56). For instance if there is fast rise in demand or quick fall in supply due factors such as refinery there may occur a rapid depletion for gasoline gases. The future of oil manufacturing and the contracts made on the future date and price for selling oil in a way affect the price of gasoline gases. On one hand with increasing technology, the future may experience increased demand for gasoline gas compared to the source of this gas and thus prices may end up increasing. On the other hand the increasing alternatives of sources of energy replacing the use of gasoline in future are likely to lead to a decrease in price of the gasoline gases. The future increase in retail gas stations which will still share the market with the existing ones will lead to l ower prices in order to attract customers. Some contracts have been established to decide on the future date and price for selling oil products. For instance a Collar contract is a mini-max strategy assuring producers of oil either a minimum or maximum range of prices for the sale of oil in the future as suggested by Gallup and Frank (221).à Ã

International Relations College - Essay Example Two such people are economist Amatya Sen and medical anthropologist Paul Farmer. Their experiences and observations regarding the state of the poor and deprived people today inspired the two authors to write and publish their works that they hope will enlighten the people of the world. Amatya Sen's composition is entitled 'Development as Freedom' while Farmer had 'Pathologies of Power: Health, Human Rights, and the New War on the Poor'. Both works reveal how deep the deterioration of society has reached. In the two compositions, we hear of true life stories that detail how many of our kind are suffering and how some had their life cut short unnecessarily. Sen calls for social development as a way to give the people the freedom to develop their selves and contribute to the development of society in general. He emphasizes the need to pursue enhanced literacy, accessible and affordable health care, the empowerment of women, and the free flow of information because these are the ingredients which will ultimately deliver us the kind of development we envision. In the course of his medical practice, Farmer came to know of the many tragedies afflicting other people. In his book, we come to know of the Haitian girl who gave herself to the whims of a soldier who she hoped would rescue her and her family from poverty. In the end, however, she only acquired AIDS from the soldier. Farmer relates how petty criminals die in Russian prison, how many people die of tuberculosis and how many people could have been saved if only social institutions were willing to give a little more. The aim of this paper is to compare and contrast the two works. I will be determining the similarities and differences in their ideas and their treatments of the subject. 2.0 Similarities The most striking similarity between Sen and Farmer is their exposition of the ills of society particularly that of the deprivation of basic necessities. So many people in the world today suffer from ignorance, disease and death because they were not afforded the opportunity to develop themselves. Some of them were even intentionally left in that state due to certain beliefs that actually contain hidden motives. Both authors wanted people to know the affliction that is surreptitiously killing many of our kind. Both authors criticize the existing system of society today due to its complacency towards addressing the plight of millions of people of the world. Sen, for example, attacks the belief system that human rights violation is inherent in Asian culture. According to him, such a system was fabricated to justify authoritarians and totalitarian regimes that hide under the guise of leaders and reformers. In any case, this should not serve as an excuse to deprive the people of the freedom to live their life to the fullest. The main problem in the system that characterize the government and other sectors of society today is that they have become engrossed with "identifying development with the growth of gross national product, or with the rise in personal incomes, or with industrialization, or with technological advance, or with social modernization" when they should have given more importance to "social and economic arrangements (for example, facilities for education and health

Business Management Affairs - Coursework Example Sole Trading When a person individually initiates and operates his/her own business, it is called sole trading. The most obvious feature of sole proprietorship is that there is no legal distinction between the business and the owner. Usually, a sole trader uses a trade name or business name instead of his legal name. Under UK company law, the proprietorsââ¬â¢ name must be shown on business emails, business stationery, and other business premises. It generally involves lower amount toward capital investment as compared to other modes of business ventures. It is best fitted to people with innovative business ideas and sufficient capital for running their business. The main benefit of this system is that the businessman owns everything what he acquires from the business. Moreover, with the feasibility of self guidance, the individual can grow without restrictions. In addition to this, as Tonkin (2006) states, sole trader can start the business with minimum set up cost and can continue operations without a tax file number. He is also exempted from many other legal charges and superannuation. Since the sole trading business specifically focuses on certain market segments, the sole trader can effectively satisfy the customer needs. In addition, the individual can take advantages of personal relationships for the business promotion. On the other hand, sole trader is not free from risks as he is the only person responsible for any loss incurred in the business. Therefore, if the sole trader faces business loss; his every asset including personal asset may be seized to discharge the liabilities he has incurred. This personal liability becomes the most threatening disadvantage of sole proprietorship. A series of legal obligations may also drag him out of the line; sometimes he needs to pay provisional taxes. Similarly, sole trader may face difficulties in the event of an unforeseen contingency since he has only restricted access to financial sources. The lack of access to financial sources also becomes a barrier for the sole trader to recruit high-caliber employees. Another major disadvantage of sole proprietorship is that it cannot allow credit sales since this type of business has limited access to working capital; this situation is an impediment to business expansion. A positive spell of possible success is foun d in the given discussion. As Matt is the winner of the TV show ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re Hiredâ⬠, he may have creative concepts as well as sufficient capital to start his business as a sole trader. Partnership When two or more persons join together with their capital and make contract to run a lawful business, it is called partnership business. This system ensures collective responsibility for all liabilities arising on the ground of the partnership business. As it is in the case of sole trader, registration of partnership is not necessary. This feature helps the partners in minimizing the struggles of legal formalities. All the strategies of partnership firms are formulated on shared opinion of partners which would make the policies rather balanced in their nature. At the same time, any partner may represent the business without giving prior information to other partners; therefore, one partnerââ¬â¢

Marijuana as a Social Problem Essay Example for Free
Marijuana as a Social Problem Essay Introduction Marijuana is a green, brown, or gray mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the hemp plant. You may hear marijuana called by street names such as pot, herb, weed, grass, boom, Mary Jane, gangster, or chronic. There are more than 200 slang terms for marijuana. All forms of marijuana are mind-altering. In other words, they change how the brain works. They all contain THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), the main active chemical in marijuana. They also contain more than 400 other chemicals. Marijuanas effects on the user depend on the strength or potency of the THC it contains. The potency of marijuana has increased since the 1970s but has been about the same since the mid-1980s. Marijuana inherits its name from Mexico, although it has a past steeped with global tradition. Long before its U.S. debut, marijuana was widely used, and popular among, some of the worldââ¬â¢s earliest civilizations. History documents show that the fiber-rich cannabis plant was used to produce rope and woven fabrics around 7000 B.C. in Central and South Asia. Additionally, it was referenced in Chinese manuscripts dating back to 2700 B.C. and ancient Indian scriptures have attributed medicinal properties to it. After being used by half of the world for nearly 8,000 years, marijuana traditionally reached North America with Christopher Columbus in 1492 A.D. Initially, cannabis was only used to make industrial goods; its recreational use in America didnââ¬â¢t become popular until the early 20th century. It wasnââ¬â¢t until then that the misunderstandings about cannabis truly began to popup. The recreational use of marijuana soon became considered as harmful as cocaine or heroin. However, it has never led to a single case of human death from overdose in its entire history. This is a sharp contrast to the heavy mortality rate of its supposed counterparts. Nonetheless, the use and cultivation of the cannabis plant was made illegal at the hands of many capable antidrug advocates. Domestic production of the marijuana plant was encouraged in various parts of America during the 17th century. The cannabis sativa plant, whose dried flower extracts can form potent recreational marijuana, was in great demand because of its long fibers which could be used for the production of clothing, ropes, and sails. In fact, The Assembly of Jamestown Colony, Virginia, passed legislation in 1619 making it compulsory for every farmer to grow the Indian hempseed ââ¬â ironically Americaââ¬â¢s first marijuana law. Other colonial states like Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania allowed hemp to be exchanged as legal tender and could even be used to pay taxes. The plant was an essential requirement during war times and farmers would be jailed if they were not able to produce enough hemp. Men who Americans hold in great reverence grew and encouraged the growth of hemp. George Washington grew hemp as his primary crop in the late 18th century for fiber production at Mount Vernon. Thomas Jefferson grew the plant as a secondary crop at Monticello and urged farmers to grow hemp in place of tobacco due to its many useful qualities. Even Benjamin Franklin used cannabis as the raw material to start one of Americaââ¬â¢s pioneering paper mills. By the mid-19th century, marijuanaââ¬â¢s medicinal properties were recognized in North America and it was used as a popular ingredient in many medicinal products. The United States Pharmacopeia had marijuana on its list of pharmaceuticals from 1850 until 1942, and many companies like Brothers Smith, Eli Lilly, Parke-Davis, and Tildens produced a cannabis extract, which Sir William Osler, ââ¬Å"the father of modern medicine,â⬠pronounced as the best treatment for migraines. Marijuana was prescribed for various pain-relieving and mood-altering conditions such as nausea, labor pains, and rheumatism. A score of medical papers were published in this era flaunting the curing abilities of cannabis, and even the personal physician of Queen Victoria, Sir John Russell Reynolds, announced cannabis as having amazing powers to treat painful maladies. It was sold openly and was easily available in public pharmacies. However, during this time, marijuana was also starting to be used more often as an intoxicant. The recreational use of marijuana started on a small scale in the late 19th century in the northeastern United States with the opening of many Turkish smoking parlors. It was also during this time that about two to five percent of Americaââ¬â¢s population had unknowingly become addicted to morphine as most over-the-counter medicines contained levels of the substance. Among the addicts were soldiers, businessmen, housewives, and children. In response, the American government passed the Pure Food and Drug Act in 1906 and formed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in part to help counter and control the addiction situation. The law, though not targeting marijuana specifically, also required cannabis -based medications to have its contents mentioned on the label. TThe Spanish-American War, and the subsequent Mexican revolution of 1910, also influenced the marijuana scene in America. During the post-revolution years there was a great influx of Mexican-Americans who mostly found work on large farms in American fields. These immigrants cultivated marijuana, which they brought with them from Mexico, and indulged in its smoking for recreational purposes. Strong prejudice against the immigrants caused many to view the plant as an addictive and violence-inducing drug that created criminals, murderers, and delinquents. Not until the 1930ââ¬â¢s, when the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and its director, Harry J. Anslinger, began drafting a bill to tax marijuana did an all out smear campaign begin, which eventually led to its national ban. State regulation of cannabis started in Massachusetts in 1911 and in New York and Maine by 1914. California passed the first state marijuana prohibition law in 1913, outlawing the preparations of hemp or ââ¬Å"locoweed,â⬠which was more a prejudiced controlling measure over the Mexican immigrant population than a controlling measure over the marijuana itself. More states came up with laws that banned marijuana, including Wyoming in 1915, Texas in 1919, and Nebraska in 1927. The states of Iowa, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Arkansas took this step in 1923. Marijuana was prohibited by 29 states by 1931 due largely to the poor socio-economic conditions during The Great Depression. With unemployment at its peak, many Americanââ¬â¢s found they competing against Mexican immigrants for jobs in the fields. Consequently, Mexican workers and their associated drug marijuana became easy targets for attack. By this time, marijuanaââ¬â¢s misleading reputation began to overshadow its historic medicinal and industrial applications.

US Governor Campaign Example
US Governor Campaign Example Gubernatorial Campaign for Jane ââ¬Å"Bitziâ⬠Johnson Miller I. Introduction Jane Bitzi is a granddaughter of the previous Texas Governor called Joe Miller, also known as ââ¬Å"Big Daddyâ⬠who was in office from 1954 to 1958. She is Caucasian with a Swiss ancestry. She is a conservative Republican and is running for Governor of Texas. Jane Miller was born and brought up on a ranch in West Texas. She was a former developer and the founder of a software company in Dallas in 1993. She sold her company, Comp Soft, for $2.5 million to Dell in 2010. Jane Miller attended The University of Texas at Dallas for only one year, but had to stop due to financial reason owing to her fatherââ¬â¢s bankruptcy. However, she managed to get a law degree from Yale following financial support from her husband. She is currently divorced from her husband Paul King with whom she had two children, Ian King and Robert King. Jane Miller worked as a Senator for the Anderson County in Texas for two terms since 2008. II. Cultural and Regional Support Political culture denotes what people feel and believe about the administration, and how they consider people ought to act towards it. A moralistic political culture is one in which society is regarded to be more significant than the individual. This group acknowledges the need of individuals to give value to the group. Government appears to be perceived as a positive force, emphasizing the commonwealth conception as the source of democratic government. In an individual political culture the administration is perceived have a practical orientation and is largely instituted for utilitarian reasons. It puts emphasis on limiting the government intervention on private activities and the government is largely restricted to the areas that encourage private initiative. In a traditional political culture, family and social and ties are prominent. The government is perceived to have a positive role in society, but this role is largely restricted to safeguarding the preservation of the prevailing social order. Daniel Elazar believes that Texasââ¬â¢ political culture is strongly individualistic with some traditionalistic elements in that administration is supposed to preserve a steady society, but arbitrate in the lives of Texans as little as possible. This will be Bitziââ¬â¢s likely strength amongst the different political cultures because Texasââ¬â¢ politics are identified with social and economic conservatism, solid support of personal politics, and mistrust of political parties. The geographic regions where she will prosper and have the majority of support will be East Texas, North Texas and Central Texas because they are republican stronghold, particularly in the South Plains and the Panhandle. Despite being a resident of West Texas, she will do poorly in West and South Texas because they are democrat stronghold. Historically, The Republican Party has been politically weak in Southern Texas, especially the areas around and near the Mexican Border (Jeffers, 2010). III. Demographic Support Regarding the demographics of Texas according to the 2010 census, the state has approximately 45% white population, 38% Hispanic population, 11% Black population, and 6% of mostly Asian population. Texas is now becoming less white and more Hispanic (Stiles, 2010). The majority of Bitziââ¬â¢s regional and cultural support will come from the white population. This will be mostly because she is white. She will get fewer votes from Hispanics and African Americans because the voting exercise in Texas is often divided along racial lines. Also, she will get fewer votes from the Black and Hispanic population because the Republican Party is stereotyped as a white party. However, she can attract more black votes by appealing to the African-American population by advocating for more access to education and jobs to benefit poor African Americans, an issue that has been traditionally Democratic. She can also attract more Hispanic vote: Hispanic voters support abortion rights in large numbers. The GOP has always made the mistake of assuming that individual conservatism corresponds to political conservatism. Hispanics, especially the working-poor and the working-class, tend to capitalize on the few state benefits compared to other races because of the cultural and language barriers. Bitzi can also appeal to Hispanic voters by stopping her move to repeal Obama Care because most Hispanics are poor and they want subsidized health care (McKinley, 2010). She will get more women votes because she is a woman. Fewer men will vote for her because she is a single mother and a feminist. She will gain more votes from higher income earners and middle class groups compared to lower income earners. This is because high-income earners and middle class citizens are known to vote for the Republicans because the party rejects tax cuts for the rich. The Republican Party is infamously recognized as a blue-collar party, but she can appeal and get more low income earners to vote for her if she promises to raise the minimum wage. She will get more conservative votes and votes from older people compared to young people. This is because the young population is more liberal and tends to support Democrats. She can attract more liberal votes by appealing to young people by advocating for an activist government that supports same-sex marriage and the legalization of marijuana (Hylton, 2010). IV. Campaign Themes The three issues that are central focus of her campaign are: Immigration, Healthcare and Education. Immigration Bitziââ¬â¢s campaign wishes to keep the immigration subject from erupting because she needs to attract Hispanic voters without isolating the conservative whites. She has been successful so far because she has supports the 2001 Texasââ¬â¢ DREAM Act, which grants in-state college tuition fee to undocumented immigrants. However, she treads lights on the topic because she does not want to be closely tied to the strict anti-immigrant position of her party, which requests this law to be repealed. Regarding border security, Bitzi wants to appeal to conservative supporters with a $400 million border security strategy that could increase 600 state troopers at the border. Her campaign wants the immigration laws to be reformed: She stresses the need for more liberal immigration policies because she wants to woo many Hispanic voters. For example, she supports the issuance of driverââ¬â¢s licenses to undocumented immigrants. She addresses the issue as ââ¬Å"heightening border securityâ⬠and not ââ¬Å"tightening immigrationâ⬠(McKinley, 2010). Healthcare Bitzi wants Obama Care to be reformed because she believes that it has led to the increase of government regulation over one sixth of the economy, resulting the demand that citizens must purchase health insurance. She wants Obama Care to be restructured because it tremendously expands Medicaid, leaving the state to take up unmaintainable financial burdens. In addition, Bitzi is advocating for block grants and wants to solidify health care liability reforms to reduce the number of flippant lawsuits and increase the figure of practicing doctors in Texas. Regarding the treatment of the terminally ill, Bitzi opposes assisted suicide, euthanasia and any withholding of cure for any reason. She believes that medical care efforts must be concentrated on research to cure the terminally ill, in addition to pain relief of the patients for their lives to be more comfortable. Bitzi is advocating for a reformed Medicare that can give seniors citizens choice and flexibility. She wants older Americans to have access to favorable insurance plans and medical savings accounts. She also wants to ensure that incentives exist for the private sector to produce drugs. She wants to lessen the administrative complexities for an improved Medicare program that will deliver reimbursement at all levels and permit healthcare providers to continue caring for patients. Regarding abortion, Bitzi is strongly against federal financing of abortion, because she views the practice as a destruction of life, thus she do not believe that the administration should support. With regards to HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, she supports prevention procedures that involve early and regular testing, abstinence, and behavioral changes that can eliminate the threat of exposure (Jeffers, 2010). Education Bitziââ¬â¢s view on education involves a variety of central ideas. Firstly she believe in the streamlining of higher education that would leave the majority of students prepared for their preferred fields and less minimum wage occupations that are unrelated to their education. Bitzi believes that the expansion of technical institutions, community college programs, online universities, private training schools, life-long and work-based education in the private sector will create competition for higher learning and is a good way to make education more accessible and to motivate institutions to match the alternative expenses and level of job-preparedness. Bitzi also believes in limiting the central government in education by only having private loans and abolishing federal student loans. This is due to the uncontrollable rise in college tuitionââ¬â¢s consequential debt that is rising above the inflation rate. She believes federal loans aggravate this problem due to their lack of transparency, and because they are more expensive compared to private loans. Bitzi considers that a bigger private sector involvement in loans could reduce tuition costs. However, she wants the federal government to function as an insurance sponsor for private sector loans. Bitzi also supports initiatives that will increase benefits to scholars who are undertaking difficult courses, create partnerships with major universities and colleges in an effort to expand math and science programs, and invite engineering, math, and science students to join lower-income schools. Young people voters are likely to respond to this move (Hylton, 2010). V. Win or Lose Bitzi will win because her stand on top Texans concerns [education, health care, and immigration] is favored by and appeals to most of the voters. Through her move to reform immigration laws to be less strict on undocumented citizens, Bitzi is hoping to appeal to the Hispanics, who constitute more than a third Texasââ¬â¢ qualified voters. Moreover, in spite of the demographic changes that continue to happen, Texasââ¬â¢ voting population of is still conservative and racial, indicating that if Bitzi could mobilize all Republicans and right-wing independents, she will win with a great margin. The Concert of a Lifetime à à à à à The concert has begun after a fifteen minute delay caused from the powder snow that started early on in the day and continued through the evening. There I stood up in front of the small crowd on this snowy Sunday evening. I glanced out upon the crowd as the piano picked up speed and intensity. I knew that I was about to strike that F chord in a few measures. I quickly removed the moisture from my fingers with the cloth I brought with me. à à à à à The band had a special meeting planned after we played the music for our churchââ¬â¢s Thanksgiving Supper. We showed up to the church on a cold Saturday morning, making our way to the auditorium. We began to discuss the plans, ideas, or even the thoughts that we had for what we should do next. Dan, the first to talk whatever the occasion, said, ââ¬Å"I think we should work on writing our own songs.â⬠That idea was quickly reviewed and considered to be an option. I thought a little bit harder about what to do and suddenly it came to me. ââ¬Å"We should have a Christmas concert. We can all pick out our favorite Christmas songs and perform them.â⬠Now this was a first class idea. à à à à à Now the band had an idea, we had the backbone for our future, but we were still missing our guitar player; whose absence haunted us for the fourth week straight. We had to begin regardless of the scenario, and we began picking out songs, one by one. The most obvious ch...

The correct answer is c. she was avenging innocent people executed because Marat had called for their heads. ecause even in her trial she claimed, ââ¬Å"I killed one man to save 100,000,â⬠showing her concern with the shear massiveness and unjustness of Maratââ¬â¢s Reign of Terror. 52. Differentiate educated & uneducated person Essay
1. Relate: Education and man. Differentiate educated man from an uneducated one. The difference between educated and uneducated people is exactly that. It is the level of education that a person has. Education is very important. Actually it is one of the most important thing for our lives in my own point of view. It is clear to us that not everyone can have the opportunity to have the education they need and this lead to divide people into two groups: educated and uneducated people. Both of them have their advantages and disadvantages for themselves. Let us evaluate them in terms of economic power, social status and mentality. It is true that educated people have a lot more opportunities in business world than uneducated people. Because they primarily have a certificate verifying their state of being educated and this is what counts most of the time. They have more opportunities to have a good job, they have a better income. Uneducated one have to work in simple temporary jobs or have to do very heavy muscles work in a construction or field. More earned money over a life time means a higher quality of life, better food and a longer life than someone without a lot of education. The issue of income according to their jobs brings us to another aspect which is the social status of these people. When you have money, you seem to be respectable for other people. One other reason why educated people have a superior status is that they act in life according to their level of knowledge. The truth that if you earned a lot, the status of life is higher, but if you have those blue collar jobs the social status is somehow lower. The mentality case, we have the impression that educated people are open-minded whereas uneducated people are somewhat closed-minded. This is the reality, the educated people have an advantage of greater knowledge about the world, other people, possibilities and existence because they are educated not only technically or scientifically but also culturally. They have a chance to see the world from the eyes of other people through the education they receive. Yet uneducated people are mostly straight laced because they have what they see and learn from their parents and what they experienced in life and the sometimes its upset most is that they treat their children with the same mentality. However, educated people want their children to go far beyond them. They want them to make better than what they did, because they know that every day and every second of ourà lives some things change and develop and some things are discovered and invented. As we see there are some aspects according to which educated and uneducated people can be compared and contrasted. I donââ¬â¢t know if I find myself biased but I guess I am, because I value education so much. I donââ¬â¢t want to put a blame on uneducated people, maybe there are reasons behind these, but I believe that poverty is not a hindrance to be educated. All of these remind us the importance of everything is EDUCATION. 2. Connect: Man and his learnings.à ââ¬Å"Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish; feed him for a lifetime.â⬠The founder of Taoism, Lao Tzu, spoke these words over 2000 years ago. Education is similar to this principle. For centuries students were ââ¬Å"fedâ⬠information and taught to memorize facts, in the hope they would retain a portion of what was taught. Today it isnââ¬â¢t enough just to feed information to students. Our world is changing so fast that new information becomes available faster than it can be taught. If a nation wants to keep pace with this ever-changing world, then learning canââ¬â¢t stop at graduation. Students as well as teachers must learn ââ¬Å"how to fishâ⬠for knowledge by becoming lifelong learners. Teachers can become life-long learners by realizing and acknowledging that life long-learning is a necessity; by learning to keep up with changes through personal and professional development; and by teaching with pa ssion, inspiring young minds to see learning as something wonderful. If a man followed his learnings, the life of each of us is in good direction, education is the key to learn and be aware of everything..
Young Goodman Brown: A Self-Portrait
Nathaniel Hawthorne was undeniably interested in the roles of his ancestors in the Salem Witch Trials.à Much of his literature combines the elements of Puritan thought with the deeper, often evil desires of the human psyche.à Young Goodman Brownââ¬â¢s nighttime journey in the story of the same name is an allegorical re-visitation to the madness of the Salem witch trials.à Through this story, Young Goodman Brown and his journey become universal symbols for all mankind.Hawthorne juxtaposed 19th Century religious thought with 16th Century Puritan thought in several of his works, including ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brownâ⬠, whose title character represents, as his name implies, every man. à à The religious thought of both the centuries in question operated on fear, which ultimately leads several individuals, under the guise of overcoming or even conquering their fears, into the world of evil.To Hawthorne, Salem was ââ¬Å"the center of the witchcraft delusion, in the witc hing times of 1692, and it shows the populace of Salem Village, those chief in authority as well as obscure young citizens like Brown, enticed by fiendish shapes into the frightful solitude of superstitious fearâ⬠(Abel 133).à à Brown, like all others of his village, is conflicted between accepting this fear and conquering it.à Unfortunately, for most, this battle has unhappy consequences.à à Brown, as a representative for all people, is generally naà ¯ve and accepting, and thus ill-equipped to handle the terrifying night in the forest (Fogle 15).à After all, it is in the best interest of the Puritan religious leaders to keep people constrained under fear rather than behave after the realization that all people sin.Several symbols equate Brownââ¬â¢s journey to the journey of every individual who struggles with the conflict between religion and self.à à The first is the forest, as a symbol for the dark and evil place where people are tempted to go. Brown , himself, is drawn into the forest, an archetype for evil and the unknown, for the reason presented above, as an attempt to overcome the fear brought on by religious dogma.à It is in the forest that he is exposed to his utmost fears and where he realizes the shortcoming of humanity. This realization begins with the temptation of man by the devil.à This devil ââ¬Å"seeks to lure the still reluctant goodman to a witch-meeting.à In the process he progressively undermines the young manââ¬â¢s faith in the institutions and the men whom he has heretofore reveredâ⬠(Fogle 17).à In doing this, Brown loses his ability to operate in the society of man and lives as a sadly disillusioned, miserable creature. According to Levy, he ââ¬Å"is Everyman.à The bargain he has struck with Satan is the universal one . . . (117).à à Thus, most people can relate to this type of demonic bargaining which has become a universal theme in literature.Anther symbol which connects Brow n to any human being is his stringent belief in another human being or institution ââ¬â this time Faith, which represents both.à She is described as wearing a cap with pink ribbons, which suggest girlishness and naivetà ©. In this way, she is just like every woman Abel calls these ribbons ââ¬Å"a badge of feminine innocenceâ⬠(Abel 130).à However, when Brown finds the ribbon in the woods, separated from his Faith (and faith), the symbolic meaning of the ribbons changes.à Here, they signify a loss of innocence.à Fogle explains that the pink of the ribbons becomes deepened into the color of blood and fire which represents faithââ¬â¢s demonic baptism into sin (Fogle 24).à The tie of temptation and women hails back to the book of Genesis, and the realization of Faithââ¬â¢s supposed fall precipitates Brownââ¬â¢s loss.à Levy calls the ribbon ââ¬Å"the tangible evidence of Faithââ¬â¢s desertionâ⬠(117) which parallels some defining moment in wh ich many people lose their faith.à This personalizes the loss for Brown, as it is for all people. As Brown traverses the forest, he encounters other individuals.à One, who looks strikingly like Brown, accompanies him for a while.à While the reader understands that this man must be one of Brownââ¬â¢s ancestors, Brown himself is blind to the similarities.à This man takes on the role of companion and implies to Brown that his own ancestors made a similar journey, which Brown also disregards. Their encounter with Goody Cloyse is symbolic for two reasons. First, the encounter has Biblical implications and second, it represents another moment if disillusionment for Brown.à The staff is mentioned several times in the Bible.à In one story Aaron throws his staff at the feet of the evil Pharoah and it turned into a serpent.à The serpent represents evil.à When the companion throws is staff at the feet of Goody Cloyse, it also turns into a serpent, indicating her evil nature as well (Hale, 17).This distresses Brown, who does not understand why his Sunday School teacher would be in the midst of the evil forest.à ââ¬Å"That old woman taught me my catechismâ⬠(Hawthorne 303). The catechism was really the only source of literature about pious living other than the Bible.à Brown probably learned all about the sins of the flesh from Goody Cloyse and ironically, she is here in the forest of evil.à Brown continues to encounter other religious officials in the forest which parallels the astonishment and sadness of any person who discovers a religious icon has behaved in a hypocritical manner.Ultimately, Brown loses his internal battle.à The realization that everyone he had revered was not what he had imagined them to be forces him to give in to the evil of the forest wholeheartedly.à He screams out, ââ¬Å"Come witch, come wizard, come Indian powwow, come devil himself!à And here comes Goodman Brown.à You may as well fear him as he fear you!â⬠(Hawthorne 306).à Of course, the story ends with ambiguity.à Did Brown really witness a devilish marriage?à Did Faith really submit to the altar of the devil?à The reader and Brown never really know the answer to these questions.Once Brown awakens, all evidence is gone.à He returns to his Faith, his elders and his life.à Faith is once again adorned in her pink ribbons, which ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ suggest, rather than symbolize something light and playful, consistent with her anxious simplicity at the beginning and the joyful, almost childish eagerness with which she greets Brown at the endâ⬠(Levy 124).à Brownââ¬â¢s journey has come full circle.à Unfortunately, the reality does not matter as much as Brownââ¬â¢s interpretation of the events that may or may not have been a dream.à He is unable to reconcile his original conceptions of the people in his life (or himself) with what he experienced on his journey.à à Though his life with Faith continues, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ his dying hour was gloomâ⬠(Hawthorne 310).Clearly, this parallels with the experiences of mankind.à Disillusionment is prevalent, and it can cause misery, sin and even death.à Loss of faith in an individual or in an institution is devastating.à Many times this loss marks the person for life, preventing them from enjoying what life has to offer.à Acceptance of sin and corruption is very hard to take, especially of a loved one or a firmly held belief.Hawthorne clearly adopted the idea that ââ¬Å"unlovely demons were everywhere, in the sunshine as well as in the darkness, and that they were hidden in menââ¬â¢s hearts and stole into their most secret thoughtsâ⬠(Abel 133). Young Goodman Brown is indicative of every good manââ¬â¢s battle with such demons.à As the story implies, this battle is more often lost than won, but most people are able to continue living their lives in spite of this acquiescence to evil.à Som e, though, such as Goodman Brown, are not able to do so.à According to Abel, ââ¬Å"such a battle often led to an inner despair. à They were constantly tormented because of the possible convictions and judgments of their peers.à This battle intrigued Hawthorne and he sought out its presence in Puritan literatureâ⬠(133).à à ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brownâ⬠is the story of all peopleââ¬â¢s inner battles.à Some win; some lose.Works CitedAbel, Darrel.à The Moral Picturesque:à Studies in Hawthorneââ¬â¢s Fiction.à Indiana:à Purdue UP,1988.Fogle, Richard Harter.à Hawthorneââ¬â¢s Fiction:à The Light and the Dark.à Norman:à U ofOklahoma P, 1952Hale, John K.à ââ¬Å"The Serpentine Staff in ââ¬ËYoung Goodman Brown.ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ à Nathanielà HawthorneReviewà 19à (Fall 1993):à 17-18.Hawthorne,à Nathaniel.à ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brown.â⬠à Perrineââ¬â¢s Literature:à Structure Sound and à à Sense.à 9th Ed. Suprime letting Literature review Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Suprime letting Literature review - Essay Example While there is no official credit profile that describes a sub prime borrower, it is generally accepted that people in the United States having a credit score below 620 points will fall into this category. In an attempt to tap this burgeoning market, lenders often speculate and take risks associated with lending to people with poor financial records. Sub prime offers an opportunity for borrowers with a less than ideal credit record to gain access to credit. It has been found that over the past six years, home ownership nationwide increased from 66 percent of the working population, to almost 70 percent. The pros and cons of sub prime markets will now be discussed in the literature review .The obvious advantage of Sub-Prime letting is of course the fact that people with poor credit history, low income and no assets are able to borrow money from many banks and lending company's .This is advantageous also as small or no deposit is accepted and this may prove attractive to many people wh o are not aware of the consequences of such borrowing or lending. However this market has its cons in the sense that it is unpredictable due to variable interest rate and the debtors may not be able to able to keep up with the payments thus causing credit victimization as the lenders may be able repossess the property/ business and are able to profit from re-sale through draconian lending contracts. Aims The main research question therefore is "To what extent has the sub- prime phenomenon of the US financial markets affected the UK economy" The reason for selecting this topic is the recent financial crisis in the US sub-prime markets which has caused a world wide concern as to its concerns for its e effects and fall-outs on the EU Bloc which includes the UK. The research will be undertaken through a variety of secondary and primary research methodologies to have a better understanding of the research question within the given time scale.Secondary Research Questions What is Sub-Prime letting What is the relationship between the UK and American Housing market What are the current conditions in the American Housing market with reference to Sub prime letting The aim is to identify the correlations between American Mortgage lenders and the UK lenders. Economic conditions, interest rates, inflations and other factors. With reference to economic conditions we may be able to identify as to why people are subjected to the sub prime market. What are the pros and cons of sub prime mortgage lending Research Strategy Research is a fact finding activity (Dominowski, 1980). The aim of primary research is to make known something previously unknown to human beings and to advance human knowledge by making it more certain or better fitting; the aim is discovery (Elias, 1986). Kerlinger (1970) uses more technical language to define it as the systematic, controlled, empirical and critical investigation of hypothetical propositions about presumed relations among natural phenomena. The research philosophy depends on the way we think about the development of knowledge and this thinking affects the way we do search (Saunders 2000). Whilst undertaking the research, a clear understanding of

Describing the leadership style of someone you respect Essay
Describing the leadership style of someone you respect - Essay Example Leadership is about how one overlooks personal interest to satisfy the needs of an organization and its workforce. This is exhibited prominently by Bobbi Quick, the former VP of operations at the Member Service centre where I work. Leadership is about what one thinks of themselves and the self-image one presents. Tracy Brian emphasizes this in the assertion ââ¬Å"If you want to be a leader or a better leader, remember that itââ¬â¢s all up to you. Itââ¬â¢s in your hands, or, even more important, in your mindâ⬠(Tracy 7). Quick has unceasingly demonstrated the ability to lead effortlessly and exemplary. Firstly, there exists an inherent belief to be a great leader that has in point of fact become a reality (Tracy 56). Self-confidence and the desire to lead are integral components that I admire in Quickââ¬â¢s form of leadership. Bobbi Quickââ¬â¢s approach to governance characterizes transactional leadership. A transactional leader is one who organizes people to realize a set objective. To some extent, a transactional and transformational leader presents similar characteristics. Quickââ¬â¢s basis of power is based on the interests of the workforce and their adaptability to the work setting. She has such high energy and really gets individuals excited to work for her while making one feel their contributions to the business really matter. In the main, it is her personality that fuels the remarkable association she has with the workforce. To a great extent, she reminds me of Groucho Marxââ¬â¢ quote, ââ¬Å"Only one man in a thousand is a leader of men -- the other 999 follow women.â⬠It is nearly impossible to such a leader who not only leads but also inspires and influences the workforce. This sentiment is echoed by Alan Murray, who posits that leadership is about adapting to the situation at ha nd and the requirements of the people involved. The influence that Bobbi Quick has in my life is
